S.E. GA. WOODWORKER'S GUILD September 12, 2006 |
Our regular General Membership monthly meeting was held at the shop of Roy Millsaps at 7:30pm. Roy Millsaps, President, opened the meeting at 7:35pm. 13 persons attending (Roy Millsaps, Allen Kuhl, Judy Kuhl, Mike Hannah, Russell Christmas, Curt Johnson, John Herald, Mike Rietveld, Steve Boily, Tom Trahan, Tom Germann, Chris Doyle, and Ronnie Cobb).
Officers: Roy Millsaps—President, Russell Christmas—Vice-President, Allen Kuhl—Secretary/Treasurer Opening: 1. The “Pledge of Allegiance” was conducted. 2. Secretary’s Report was read and approved. 3. Treasurer’s Report was read and approved, with $391.47 in account. 4. Membership report: 2 new memberships were received at the Turner’s meeting 8/2 (Tom Germann, Chris Doyle). One potential new member was at this meeting 9/12/06 (Ronnie Cobb). 5. V/P Minute: Russell Christmas stated how very well the Catfish Festival was conducted, and how the manning was excellent. When persons who were scheduled could not participate fully, other members filled in for them with no problems. Congratulations to all who participated! 6. Turners’ meeting report: Mike Rietveld reported that Basic tool skills and techniques have been demonstrated, and learned by the majority of members. Projects and hands-on application will be the concentration for meetings. Beginning in the new calendar year we will again be offering beginning techniques instruction. (For any new members who attend our meetings, we will show them instruction and safety precautions commensurate with their abilities). Possibilities for guest speakers/instructors was brought up and discussed.
Old Business: 1. Dues of $20./year per family are due in August each year, to begin a new year. Dues are prorated for those new persons joining in mid-year.
2. “Guild Directory” --gives each active member’s name, address, phone #’s, and type of woodworking expertise/knowledge. This is a means of contacting you (via e-mail, phone, address, etc), so be sure we have correct information. You can also verify info (through Curt Johnson) on the guild website.
3. Festivals and booths: a) Discussion—The Catfish Festival in Kingsland (Sept 2-4, 2006) was a huge success, with media coverage of our booths and display, and good participation by all. b) John Herald presented the idea of a raffle project to be made for each festival. He has been appointed to head up the raffle presentations and festivals organization. c) Discussion of “Items For Sale” at Festivals--general guidelines: 1) Do not try to sell items as your own design at the booth during Festivals that someone from the Guild taught you how to make or do—that would be infringement on their knowledge and expertise. 2) Items for Raffle, Display, or For Sale need to be brought in at least 2 weeks prior to Festivals for Guild approval, so that the Guild can have some idea of what will be displayed and represented as quality merchandise. d) Booth Manning needs to be established, and assignment of hours by signup sheet should be followed. We need to have a “new-member/interest sign-up” sheet available, so that we can encourage/contact anyone who has an interest in becoming a member; and also to have a “receipt book” for anyone that wants to join immediately. Our brochures for distribution need to be utilized. Also mentioned, we should have a “Schedule of Events” posted (such as a bulletin board in the tent) describing our demo times and topics. Pegboard divider boards were suggested as mounting for picture displays.
New Business: 1. Projects: It’s not too early to start thinking about our “Christmas” project. Also continuing about our “Festivals” projects and sale items needed. Raffle, Display, and Sale items need to be “previewed”. 2. Festivals: Next Festival: Rock Shrimp in St. Mary’s (Oct 7)—1 day event, 1 booth with power required. Motioned and approved at Aug meeting to pre-register and pay the fee of $60.00. NEED MANNING and a schedule for participation for the booth. Need more volunteers to help man the 1-day event. Also for Demos—need workers to do demo presentations. Contact Russell Christmas, or John Herald, or Roy Millsaps to check the schedule/signup/volunteer. We need to have a display case, etc to put our display items in so that we can show them without worry of damage or mishandling. Bring your ideas to next meeting (Oct 10). 3. We are now represented in “White Oak Plantation” (an Exclusive, by-invitation-only organization) to display/produce individual project items. An individual has a 6-month obligation once invited. See Roy for details.
Show & Tell: 1. Roy Millsaps: Table veneer he and Pete Bentivegna have been working on.
Safety Video / Demo: (Roy Millsaps): Moisture meters and operation.
(Roy Millsaps adjourned the business meeting at 8:20pm).
