S.E. GA. WOODWORKER'S GUILD

May 09 ,2006

Our regular General Membership monthly meeting was held at the home/shop of Barbara Hahn at 7:30pm.  Roy Millsaps, President, opened the meeting at 7:40pm.  8 persons attending (Roy Millsaps, Steve Boily, Allen Kuhl, Judy Kuhl, John Herald, Mike Hanna, Curt Johnson, Barbara Hahn).

Officers:  Roy Millsaps—President,

                Steve Boily—Vice-President,

                Allen Kuhl—Secretary/Treasurer

Opening:

The “Pledge of Allegiance” was conducted.

Secretary’s Report was read and approved.

Treasurer’s Report was read and approved, with $601.47 in account.

Membership report:  no new memberships were received at this meeting.

Turners’ meeting report:  Basic tool skills and techniques have been demonstrated, and learned by the majority of members.  Now, projects and hands-on application will be forthcoming.

Old Business:

1.  Dues of $20./year per family are due in August each year, to begin a new year.  Dues are prorated for those new persons joining in mid-year.

2.  “Show & Tell”:  Each meeting we would like to have projects you are working on brought in (or to be discussed).  You can get help, ideas, improvements, learn new skills along with helping others.  Get a chance to “show-off”.

3.  Our Guild Website, SEGAwoodguild.org, is now operational and should be reviewed by each member.

4.  Curt Johnson has designed a “Guild Directory” which gives each active member’s name, address, phone #’s, and type of woodworking expertise/knowledge.  Be sure that he has your correct information.  You can also verify info on the guild website.

5.  Turners’ Guild—Mike Rietveld and Russell Christmas have been developing woodturning interest in our members, and have been hosting the Turners’ meetings each month at Mike Rietveld’s shop.  If you want to be a part and learn more about turning, come out to the meetings and experience hands-on training for yourself.  They would like to setup a plan-of-training schedule, and help you with any project you have in mind.

6.  Festivals and booths:

     a)  Discussion—A motion was made and approved previously to get a double booth space for festivals (one for display, and the other for working demonstrations).  We have 2-10X10 tents available from guild members for festival use.

     b)  John Herald presented the idea of a raffle project to be made for each festival.  He will head up looking further into this.

     c)  Discussion of  Items For Sale” at Festivals--general guidelines:

Do not try to sell items as your own design at the booth during Festivals that someone from the Guild taught you how to make or do—that would be infringement on their knowledge and expertise.

     d)  Report on Crawfish Festival in Woodbine, April 28 & 29, 2006—Everything went “really well”, as said by Roy Millsaps.  We had a slight miscommunication about needing to have our booths open on Friday, but there was adequate coverage by Guild members for that time period also.  Many patrons came by and admired the artistry of the displays and enjoyed the demonstrations.

New Business:

1.  As evidenced at the Crawfish Festival in Woodbine, two tents and having demonstrations and displays are a good viewing draw for the crowds of people coming to the festivals. Testing of the lathe and equipment being used and the generator for use need to be accomplished prior to the setup date.  Manning needs to be established.  Need to remember Plexiglas shield for safety.  Curt Johnson said he has more Plexiglas in order to make a side shield which was recommended by Roy Millsaps.  It was mentioned by Steve Boily that not all festivals will require our use of 2 tents; it is not an automatic 2 tents every time.  We need to have a “sign-up” sheet available, so that we can encourage anyone who has an interest in becoming a member, and also to have a “receipt book” for anyone that wants to join immediately.  Our brochures for distribution need to be updated and utilized.

2.  Projects:

It’s not too early to start thinking about our “Christmas” project.  Also about our “Festivals” projects—how to improve our showing.  Mike Rietveld recommended we raffle the project the guild makes during the Festival.  Mike Hannah discussed having a contest to make a project of the members’ choice, according to specified guidelines of the Guild.  He will head up the committee.  He also mentioned having small “$5 or $10” priced items to encourage people to “buy” rather than just “look”.

3.  Videos:

Last meeting Russell recommended we use a video camera to show close ups on a TV screen for better viewing by the members.  John Herald has a small TV that can be used.  Russell recommended the demonstration be recorded and videos be made available to the Guild.  Also for Turners’ meetings.

4.  A discussion was presented for having demonstration meetings at Woodcrafts in Jacksonville.  Steve Boily will check it out and report to the Guild.

5.  Curt Johnson said that he would like to have photos and the capability of showing them on the website in the near future.  That brought up a discussion from Barbara Hahn that not everyone knows how to send (or even how to download) pictures.  Maybe we could have a “How-To” meeting item to demonstrate and instruct on procedures of cameras and pictures.

6.  Election of Guild Officers for new terms—

Notice for election of officers was not put out in time for this meeting, so the elections will be postponed until our June 13th General Membership meeting at Roy’s shop.  Floor Nominations will be taken, and signed nominations will be discussed.  More information will be available on the website.

7.  4th of July Festival—

An application for the 4th of July Festival in St Marys was presented.  Discussion was made about needing two booth spaces and the early-bird application deadline of June 15th.  Roy Millsaps tabled further discussion until the next business meeting on June 13th.

Show & Tell:

1.  Steve Boily showed a “spittoon” bowl.

2.  Mike Hanna showed router bits and blocks from EagleAmerica.

3.  Barbara Hahn showed her turned bowls, and a baby cradle she is working on.

Safety Video & Demo:

None.

Roy Millsaps adjourned the business meeting at 8:30pm.
