S.E. GA. WOODWORKER'S GUILD July 11 ,2006 |
Our regular General Membership monthly meeting was held at the shop of Roy Millsaps at 7:30pm. Roy Millsaps, President, opened the meeting at 7:35pm. 6 persons attending (Roy Millsaps, Allen Kuhl, Judy Kuhl, Mike Rietveld, Russell Christmas, Sandra Meyer).
Officers: Roy Millsaps—President, Russell Christmas—Vice-President, Allen Kuhl—Secretary/Treasurer
Opening: The “Pledge of Allegiance” was conducted. Secretary’s Report was read and approved. Treasurer’s Report was read and approved, with $541.47 in account. Membership report: no new memberships were received at this meeting. Turners’ meeting report: Basic tool skills and techniques have been demonstrated, and learned by the majority of members. Now, projects and hands-on application will be forthcoming.
Old Business: 1. Dues of $20./year per family are due in August each year, to begin a new year. Dues are prorated for those new persons joining in mid-year.
2. “Guild Directory” --gives each active member’s name, address, phone #’s, and type of woodworking expertise/knowledge. Be sure that we have your correct information. You can also verify info (through Curt Johnson) on the guild website.
3. Turners’ Guild—Mike Rietveld and Russell Christmas have been hosting the Turners’ meetings each month at Mike Rietveld’s shop. If you want to be a part and learn more about turning, come out to the meetings and experience hands-on training for yourself. They, and other Turners, would like to help you with any project you have in mind.
4. Festivals and booths: a) Discussion—A motion was made and approved previously to get a double booth space for festivals (one for display, and the other for working demonstrations). We have 2-10X10 tents available from guild members for festival use. b) John Herald presented the idea of a raffle project to be made for each festival. He will head up the raffle presentations and festivals organization. c) “Festivals” projects—how to improve our showing: Mike Rietveld recommended we raffle the project the guild makes during the Festival. Mike Hannah discussed having a contest to make a project of the members’ choice, according to specified guidelines of the Guild. He will head up the committee. He also mentioned having small “$5 or $10” priced items to encourage people to “buy” rather than just “look”. d) Discussion of “Items For Sale” at Festivals--general guidelines: Do not try to sell items as your own design at the booth during Festivals that someone from the Guild taught you how to make or do—that would be infringement on their knowledge and expertise. e) As evidenced at prior Festivals, two tents and having demonstrations and displays are a good viewing draw for the crowds of people coming to the festivals. It was mentioned by Steve Boily that not all festivals will require our use of 2 tents. Manning needs to be established, and assignment of hours by signup sheet should be followed. We need to have a “new-member/interest sign-up” sheet available, so that we can encourage/contact anyone who has an interest in becoming a member; and also to have a “receipt book” for anyone that wants to join immediately. Our brochures for distribution need to be updated and utilized.
7. Videos: Russell recommended we use a video camera to show close ups on a TV screen for better viewing by the members. The camera was setup for the June 13, 2006 meeting. Russell recommended the demonstration be recorded and videos be made available to the Guild. Also for Turners’ meetings.
New Business: 1. Projects: It’s not too early to start thinking about our “Christmas” project. Also about our “Festivals” projects and sale items needed. Would like to have “different” demos and sale items need to be “previewed”.
2. Festivals: Catfish Festival in Kingsland (Sept. 2,3,4)—NEED MANNING and a schedule for participation for the booths. Need more volunteers to help man the 3-day event. It is to be realized that not everyone can be available all three days, so we should set up a time-schedule sheet. Also for Demos—need workers to do demo presentations.
3. “V.P. Minute”—a new part of the business meeting. Roy Millsaps has designated the V.P. (Russell Christmas) to have a “time of sharing” devoted & recorded in the minutes from now on.
Show & Tell: 1. Roy Millsaps showed a book: “The Real Wood BIBLE”. He presented a “Wood Density” quiz to several members to identify 5 or 6 wood blocks by density. Russell Christmas also mentioned some websites to check out about woods.
Safety Video & Demo: None.
Roy Millsaps adjourned the business meeting at 8:00pm.
Next GUILD meetings: 1) Turners’ Meeting—Wednesday, Aug 2nd, at 7:30pm at Mike Rietveld’s shop. 2) Guild general business meeting--Tuesday, Aug 8th, at 7:00pm at Roy Millsaps’ shop. Video/Demo: “Drawknife” demo.
Upcoming events: 1. Catfish Festival—in Kingsland, Sept. 2,3,4th, 2006.
