S.E. GA. WOODWORKER'S GUILD August 8 ,2006 |
Our regular General Membership monthly meeting was held at the shop of Roy Millsaps at 7:30pm. Roy Millsaps, President, opened the meeting at 7:35pm. 7 persons attending (Roy Millsaps, Allen Kuhl, Judy Kuhl, Mike Hannah, Russell Christmas, Sandra Meyer, John Herald).
Officers: Roy Millsaps—President, Russell Christmas—Vice-President, Allen Kuhl—Secretary/Treasurer
Opening: 1. The “Pledge of Allegiance” was conducted. 2. Secretary’s Report was read and approved. 3. Treasurer’s Report was read and approved, with $541.47 in account. 4. Membership report: 2 new memberships were received at the Turner’s meeting 8/2. 5. Turners’ meeting report: Basic tool skills and techniques have been demonstrated, and learned by the majority of members. Projects and hands-on application will be the concentration for meetings.
Old Business: 1. Dues of $20./year per family are due in August each year, to begin a new year. Dues are prorated for those new persons joining in mid-year.
2. “Guild Directory” --gives each active member’s name, address, phone #’s, and type of woodworking expertise/knowledge. Be sure that we have your correct information. You can also verify info (through Curt Johnson) on the guild website.
3. Turners’ Guild—Mike Rietveld has been hosting the Turners’ meetings each month at his shop, and has been appointed as “Head Turner”. If you want to be a part and learn more about turning, come out to the meetings and experience hands-on training for yourself. The group would like to help you with any project you have in mind.
4. Festivals and booths: a) Discussion—A motion was made and approved previously to get a double booth space for festivals (one for display, and the other for working demonstrations). We have 2-10X10 tents available from guild members for festival use. b) John Herald presented the idea of a raffle project to be made for each festival. He has been appointed to head up the raffle presentations and festivals organization. c) Discussion of “Items For Sale” at Festivals--general guidelines: Do not try to sell items as your own design at the booth during Festivals that someone from the Guild taught you how to make or do—that would be infringement on their knowledge and expertise. d) Booth Manning needs to be established, and assignment of hours by signup sheet should be followed. We need to have a “new-member/interest sign-up” sheet available, so that we can encourage/contact anyone who has an interest in becoming a member; and also to have a “receipt book” for anyone that wants to join immediately. Our brochures for distribution need to be updated and utilized. Also mentioned, we should have a “Schedule of Events” posted (such as a bulletin board in the tent) describing our demo times and topics.
New Business: 1. Projects: It’s not too early to start thinking about our “Christmas” project. Also about our “Festivals” projects and sale items needed. Would like to have “different” demos, and sale items need to be “previewed”.
2. Festivals: a) Catfish Festival in Kingsland (Sept. 2,3,4)—NEED MANNING and a schedule for participation for the booths. Need more volunteers to help man the 3-day event. It is to be realized that not everyone can be available all three days, so we should set up a time-schedule sheet. Also for Demos—need workers to do demo presentations. Contact Russell Christmas, or John Herald, or Roy Millsaps to check the schedule/signup/volunteer. This meeting is the last before the festival, so be sure you are represented. b) Next Festival: Rock Shrimp in St. Mary’s (Oct 7)—1 day event, 1 booth with power required. Motioned and approved to pre-register and pay the fee of $60.00.
Show & Tell: 1. Judy Kuhl: Turned bowl. 2. Sandra Meyer: Segmented bowl.
Safety Video & Demo: None.
(Roy Millsaps adjourned the business meeting at 8:20pm).
Next GUILD meetings: 1) Turners’ Meeting—Wednesday, Sept 6th, at 7:30pm at Mike Rietveld’s shop. 2) Guild general business meeting--Tuesday, Sept 12th, at 7:30pm at Roy Millsaps’ shop. Video/Demo: “Drawknife” demo.
Upcoming events: 1. Catfish Festival—in Kingsland, Sept. 2, 3, 4th, 2006. 2. Rock Shrimp Festival—in St. Marys, Oct 7, 2006.
